Fatty liver in literal terms means excessive too much fat in the accumulating the liver. Since liver is the organ for metabolism of fat and various other drugs. The following could be the causes for fat accumulation:
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Some medicine such as tetracycline, valproic acid etc.
- Nonalcoholic steatohepatitid which is nothing but fatty liver by without alcohol consumption. In this case there is liver swelling (inflammation) fibrosis (hardening) & may lead to cancer.
- Severe weight loss
- Celiac disease
One may experience loss of appetite, weight loss, pain in the abdomen, feeling terid, confusion. If this fatty liver is not controlled & progresses to cirrhosis or liver failure them it can increase the symptoms such as fluid in the abdomen (ascites) faundice bleeding, vomiting
- Physical examination
- Radiological tests – USG, CT or MRI Now a days fibroscan is also available
- Blood tests – The doctor may advise a panel of tests CBC, LFT, PT, APTT, LIPID PROFILE, FIBROTESTS
- Liver Biopsy
Depending on the cause of fatty some measures can be taken such as bariatie Sx, weight loss etc.
