  • Heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood to various parts of the body and provides oxygen .
  • The heart is working through out the day and night and never stops working even for a second.

  • Cholesterol is normally present in the body and is a waxy substance with various functions . It is important for the formation of Vitamin D in the body and is also essential for the synthesis of many hormones .
  •  There are two major types of cholesterol , the ‘good cholesterol ‘ also known as the HDL cholesterol ( high Density Lipoprotein ) and the ‘Bad Cholesterol ‘ also called the low density lipoprotein or LDL cholesterol.
  • lDL cholesterol is responsible for depositing on the  blood vessel walls,forming plaques  and clogging the vessel walls .The HDL cholesterol is however protective and is hence called the good cholesterol .
  • The first step towards a healthy heart is to maintain an optimal cholesterol level .
  • The total cholesterol should be less tha 200 mg/dl
  • The LDL cholesterol should be less than 70 mg/dl if one has had previos history of hearyt disease of should be less than 100mg/dl if one has no previos history of heart disease.
  • HDL cholesterol  or Good Cholesterol should be      Greater than 40 mg/dL for men and greater than 50 mg/dL for women.
  • The recommended levels of  triglycerides should be less than 150 mg/dl.
  • The levels of cholesterol should be monitored as early as 20 years of age and regular cholesterol levels shoould be monitored.
  •  The best way to keep an optimal level of good and bad cholesterol is by making some life style changes .
  • Meals should bemainly fresh fruits,salads, vegetables and whole grains. Low fat  dairy products can be consumed along with  poultry, fish, and nuts.Red meat,simple carbohydrates such as sugars should be avoided.
  • Daily exerscise of atleast one hour should be included in the routine.
  • One should quit smoking and should also avoid second hand smoke.
  • A healthy weight should be maintained .
  • Patients who are diabetics should maintaind their sugar levels and should control thier diabetes with proper medication ,diet and exerscise.
